Press Release: Back Biomass Campaign Publishes Mythbuster

The Back Biomass campaign has launched a ‘mythbusting’ booklet to explain how the sustainable biomass energy sector works. Launched at a reception in the House of Lords, the mythbuster combats misunderstandings around how the biomass industry can help meet UK energy needs while also delivering a net reduction in atmospheric carbon.

The booklet was launched yesterday at the Back Biomass Christmas reception with keynote speakers Lord Browne of Madingley (former Chief Executive of BP) and Tom Greatrex MP (Shadow Energy Minister). Former Energy Minister Charles Hendry MP also attended alongside a range of industry leaders.

The mythbuster includes key topics such as:

  • How the biomass cycle removes carbon from the atmosphere
  • How forests and trees go to different uses, with biomass complementing other wood-buying industries
  • How biomass for energy encourages sustainable forestry around the world
  • How biomass for energy can help build healthier forests that absorb more carbon than they emit.

Paul Thompson, the Renewable Energy Association’s Head of Policy, commented:

“We’re pleased to launch this mythbuster to explain the sector’s work. We have seen reports recently that are presented as academic research but based on a flawed understanding of existing research and the way forests operate.

“This is an important part of our work to promote better and wider understanding; we want everyone to know that biomass power and CHP are an essential part of the UK’s energy mix. It can help deliver a sustainable, low-carbon future and the industry is ready to achieve that potential.”
