Plans for a £130m biomass-fuelled energy plant in North-East Lincolnshire have been approved by councillors.

The wood-burning power plant will be built in Immingham and could create up to 250 jobs, developers Real Ventures say.

The plant will be built on land owned by Associated British Ports (ABP).

John Fitzgerald, of ABP, said it was further confirmation of Immingham's importance "as a developing hub for the renewable energy business".

Real Ventures said the combined heat and power facility would burn sustainably sourced wood pellets as fuel.

The biomass plant should be up and running by 2015 with an operational life-span of 25 years.

North-East Lincolnshire Council said the development reinforced its position "at the forefront of the expanding European renewable energy industry".
