Plans to build a biomass power station in Scawby Brook, Lincolnshire, along with a railway unloading facility and new port facilities have been revealed by a French power generation company.

Centrica expects the planned Glanford Brigg Biomass Power Station to generate a net output of 137MW of electricity, and will invest in a railway unloading facility and necessary material handling equipment to feed the power station.

Proposals for new port facilities will be handled separately from the power station and railway unloading facility they are not within the site footprint, which was formerly a sugar refinery featuring its own rail sidings.

Another aspect of the plan includes a biomass storage facility that may be used to house material destined for other biomass power stations in the region.

The new power station will be built next to an existing gas-fired power station owned by Centrica on the site, and is expected to buoy the local economy by providing 50 permanent jobs along with 500 jobs during the construction phase.

A public consultation process is already underway, and a finalised planning permission application will be made towards the end of this year.
