I am writing to you as my local MP who is interested in energy issues, asking you to please support the UK biomass industry.

The UK urgently needs energy security, jobs and growth. Sustainable biomass can make a vital contribution to all of these. Please help ensure biomass policy is not hijacked which would restrict biomass development and curtail significant investment in crucial new infrastructure the UK so desperately needs.

Ofgem predicts a capacity crunch of just 4% by 2015. This would have disastrous effects on the costs and reliability of energy for hard pressed consumers and businesses struggling to remain competitive. New nuclear projects will not be ready until the 2020s, nor offshore wind. Biomass is ready today. Politicians must be bold and act now to diversify our energy mix and help get shovel ready projects off the ground and onto our electricity grid as soon as possible.

Options for reliable, affordable, rapidly deployable technologies are extremely limited. Renewable power from sustainable biomass ticks every box.

1. Jobs and growth: Already contributing over a billion pounds and supporting tens of thousands of UK jobs (including transport, farming, construction and engineering), bioenergy could support up to 58,000 UK jobs by 2020

2. Energy Security: Biomass generates controllable, on-demand energy to complement intermittent renewables such as wind and solar

3. Renewable Power: It has the potential to supply 11% of UK primary energy demand by 2020

4. Fast and affordable for taxpayers: As a mature and proven technology, biomass is highly cost-competitive with other low carbon options and can be deployed extremely quickly

5. Sustainable: Crucially, Generators will only receive Government support if they can independently verify minimum greenhouse gas savings of 60% and demonstrate that they have not sourced any supply from ecologically precious areas (such as ancient woodland or wetlands)

6. Supports forestry: UK wood prices have dropped 15% in the last 15 years. The biomass industry incentivises active management of forestry (50% of which is unmanaged in England), creating markets for wood that would otherwise be unused and ensuring it makes economic sense for forests to stay forests.

Despite all these benefits, I am concerned by the current policy direction which appears to seek to restrict the roll out of biomass in the UK. If this happens, a significant number of new plants could not be built - a terrible outcome for our economy and our energy future. The biomass sector is geared up and shovel ready to deliver new investment, infrastructure and energy security. As my MP representative, I am asking you to voice your support for UK biomass in parliament at every possible opportunity.
