BioEnergy Insight: Land Energy opens 60,000-tonne wood pellet plant

19/10/2012

Biomass energy supplier Land Energy's new multi-million pound wood pellet production plant, based in Girvan in Ayrshire, Scotland, is operational.

The facility has the capacity to manufacture 60,000 tonnes of wood pellets a year using locally-sourced timber from sustainable forests and sawmills within a 50-mile radius of the plant. This is enough to benefit more than 15,000 households.

The plant has been installed with a biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) system which will generate 2.3MW of renewable power and 10MW of heat.

'We are one of the only suppliers in the UK to have installed a combined heat and power system into a wood pellet manufacturing plant allowing us to make our own electricity,' explains John Westmacott of Land Energy.

The timber-based wood pellets produced at the site comply with the ENplusA1 quality standard.
